Atma Jaya School of Tourism with Semi.Semu held the second program of English Day on Saturday, May 22nd, 2021 for the class of 2019. It started from 1 PM to 3.00 PM and due to Covid-19, the event was still held online through the Microsoft Teams application. Just like the first program, the discussion session was guided by Atma Jaya School of Tourism’s lecturers, Mr. Yerik Afrianto Singgalen and Miss Zsarin Astria. The students were discussed these topics below:
- COVID-19: The Importance of Sustainable Ecology and Tourism.
- Tourism and Movies and Tourism: How Movies Boost Tourism.
The program was opened by Maria Leonora as the master of ceremony. After that, all of the students were divided into two meeting rooms and each room was guided by the moderators to discuss two different topics. The given time for the discussion session was 90 minutes. During the discussion session, the moderators were using two different approaches methods. As for Meeting Room #1, Mr. Yerik as their moderator started by presenting about sustainable development goals. He also showed a clip of news related to the topic. After that, they moved to the next session where Mr. Yerik asked the students to join an interactive presentation tool called menti.com. The students were also asked to elaborate their answers to the questions that were asked earlier on the website. On the other hand, Miss Zsarin from Meeting Room #2 went without any presentation tool but it was still an insightful discussion session. She guided the students to say what was on their minds linked to the topic, whether it was an opinion or a fact. To tense down the students, Miss Zsarin also led a game of charades but still related to the topic.
After the discussion has ended, all of the students were assigned back to the main meeting room to share their experiences during the discussion session. Kadek Kanica, one of the students shared that the discussion session was fun and interesting to experience. She said that she gained many insights from the session. She had the first topic for the discussion and shared her concern towards how important it is to conserve ecology and tourism from every aspect (sociocultural, environment, economics, and politics) especially during the Covid-19 times. Other than her, Karyn Sunjoyo also said it was intriguing and shared her experience during the discussion session with Tourism and Movies as the topic of discussion. She stated that both tourism and movies have mutual causality or that they affected each other in this modern era. As for the example, K-dramas have succeeded to improve South Korea’s tourism activity. Many people traveled the country intending to trace the shooting location of the dramas they have watched or to discover and experience South Korean cuisine and culture. Recalling from the discussion session earlier, for the tourism that boosts a movie or a show, it can be seen how the movie Coco has successfully attracted the audience by portraying the Mexican culture (Día de Los Muertos) as its references.
At the end of the program, the students were asked to fill out the evaluation forms for the moderators and the organizer.
